RALEIGH, NC (AP) — Efforts by the N.C. Department of Public Safety and the FBI have led to the resolution of cases involving 43 long-term escapees from the state’s prisons.
The department issued a statement Monday on the year-long investigation. According to officials, 10 wanted fugitives were found at-large, arrested and returned to the state prison system to complete their sentences. DPS said 15 escapees were found imprisoned in other states or in the federal prison system, many under aliases.
The remaining 18 escapees were confirmed to be dead or are believed to be dead and work is in progress to obtain death certificates.
A list of 12 “Most Wanted” escapees has developed from the remaining cases, and investigators are seeking the public’s help with any information on the where the escapees may be.
